Why are we surprised?

Whether or not they admit it, many will be surprised by this-most notably lefties with egg on their face from having spent the last few months blathering about how Sanders’s candidacy was “doomed” from the beginning. (More on those later.)

For now, someone who would not be surprised is Noam Chomsky who has been routinely observing that “The population . . . basically tend(s) toward classical New Deal positions. It favors social spending over military spending, it favors increased taxes if they are used for improving the environment, education, or social welfare.” Why should anyone be surprised that a candidate who bases his campaign on what the public supports succeeds while a candidate whose policies directly mirror her contempt for the public fails?
